Our Nation at 250

Dear MGA Community,

As our nation approaches its 250th anniversary, we have a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the remarkable journey that has shaped the American story. From the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the creation of our constitutional democracy to our emergence as a global leader and our ongoing efforts to expand rights and opportunity, each generation has contributed to the continuing pursuit of building a more perfect union.

I have my own memory of marking one of these milestones. I recall the Bicentennial of 1976 as a high school student in London, celebrating it alongside my American friend Bruce, whose military family was stationed in the UK at the time. There was something quietly remarkable in a British teenager and an American one marking that anniversary together, a small friendship across the Atlantic that mirrored the larger bond between our nations. That year honored that relationship; even the late Queen Elizabeth II traveled to Boston (the location of the Boston Tea Party, no less) to celebrate the special American occasion. Now, fifty years on, I feel the wonder of it all the more keenly, for today I am fortunate to count myself an American as well as a Brit, and to share in this story not only as an admirer but as a citizen.

At the heart of that journey has been education. From the Republic's earliest days, it has been an essential tool for fostering democracy and forging the connections that bind a diverse people together. It has fueled discovery and innovation, strengthened our communities, and helped sustain the democratic ideals upon which our nation was founded. Through education, we carry forward the promise of E Pluribus Unum (out of many, one), preparing each new generation to engage thoughtfully with the challenges and opportunities before us.

As we look toward this historic milestone, I encourage each of us to consider the role we play in writing the next chapter of our shared story. Whether through teaching and learning, service to others, or engagement within our communities, we each have the opportunity to strengthen the bonds that connect us and contribute to the vitality of our nation — all while embracing the core values that make us Knights.

I also want to wish each of you a safe and happy upcoming July 4th holiday weekend. I hope you have the chance to celebrate, recharge, and enjoy meaningful time with family and friends.

Go Knights!

Chris
